Tour Overview

Join us for a guided visit to the Konark Sun Temple, a 13th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site in Odisha dedicated to Surya, the Hindu Sun God. Renowned for its distinctive architecture and intricate stone carvings, the Temple is widely regarded as the pinnacle of Kalinga (Orissan) temple architecture.

This thoughtfully curated tour departs from Bhubaneswar and takes visitors to one of India’s most evocative monuments. Beyond its architectural grandeur, Konark offers a deeper cultural narrative,  one that reflects balance, continuity of life, and the relationship between human experience and the cosmos.

The tour is well suited to international visitors and participants travelling from across India, particularly those with an interest in heritage, architecture, and cultural history.

Historical and Cultural Significance

Built in the 13th century CE by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga dynasty, the Konark Sun Temple was conceived as a monumental stone chariot of Surya, drawn by seven horses and adorned with twenty-four intricately carved wheels, each functioning as a sundial.

The site reflects exceptional craftsmanship and advanced astronomical knowledge, and stands as a defining example of Kalinga temple architecture. Known historically to European sailors as the “Black Pagoda,” Konark also served as a coastal landmark, underscoring Odisha’s maritime connections with Southeast Asia and the wider world.

The Sculptures and Their Meaning

Konark’s sculptural panels are celebrated not only for their detail, but for the ideas they convey. The carvings, including depictions of couples,   reflect a worldview in which love, companionship, and human desire are integral to a balanced life, alongside spiritual aspiration.

For many visitors, this symbolism is part of what makes Konark distinctive, presenting human relationships as expressions of harmony and continuity.
